All You Need to Know About Oral Hygiene While You Have Braces

If you want a successful orthodontic experience, but you’re not sure how to take good care of your teeth while aligning your smile, our team is more than happy to help!

It’s important to maintain great oral hygiene while correcting your smile, so to help you properly clean your teeth each day, our team recommends doing the following:

-Brush: Thoroughly brush your teeth four times a day, including after each meal and at bedtime. Doing so will help remove the food particles from your braces and also help you avoid having a food-filled smile. We recommend using a Sonicare electric toothbrush for optimal results. These are available at our office and most pharmacies.

-Floss: Floss your smile at least once a day, preferably at bedtime, to remove the food particles and plaque that reside between your teeth and accumulate on your appliances. Use the reusable floss threader we provide to help get under the archwire. Be sure not to put too much pressure on the archwire, and be careful not to floss too forcefully. Be sure to gently floss between each tooth.

-Rinse: Rinse your mouth daily with fluoride or antibacterial mouthwash. This will help you complete the cleaning job, nourish your teeth, and improve your breath.

-Get regular dental cleanings: Be sure to visit your general dentist at least twice a year for a regular checkup and professional cleaning.

If you practice proper oral hygiene techniques during treatment, you won’t need to worry about tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth discoloration.
