Do You Need to See Your Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?

The answer is a resounding “YES!”

Patients may assume they don’t need to see their general dentist during orthodontic treatment, since they see Dr. Spillers and Dr. Gordon for orthodontic check-ups regularly.

While everyone should visit their dentist for a routine cleaning every six months, it is especially important for patients who are having orthodontic treatment. Some may even need a dental cleaning every three months.

Here are some reasons:

1. Oral appliances, braces, Invisalign attachments, etc., create additional places for bacteria and food particles to hide.

Accumulation of this bacteria may lead to cavities and/or decalcification (loss of calcium) in the teeth. Decalcification appears as unsightly white spots on the teeth, and is irreversible. Bad oral hygiene may also lead to gum infections or gum disease. While brushing and flossing at home play a part in keeping these problems at bay, frequent dental cleanings help ensure plaque and debris are removed as completely as possible.

2. Cavities and bad oral hygiene can delay orthodontic treatment.

Who wants to be in braces longer than needed? No one! If a patient’s oral hygiene becomes a point or concern, we will stop their treatment and resume it only after their oral hygiene improves.

3. Your dentist performs a different role in caring for your teeth than we do.

Orthodontists are specialists who focus on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities, as well as the alignment of the teeth and jaws. General dentists oversee your dental cleanings and any restorative work you may need. They also check for oral cancers, gum disease and a host of other important things.

Dr. Spillers and Dr. Gordon work closely with your general dentist to coordinate an oral treatment plan that’s best for you — to give you a healthy and beautiful smile.
