The Four Types of Malocclusion You May Be Suffering From

An improper bite, also known as malocclusion, is inconvenient and bothersome, especially because it prohibits your ability to properly smile, talk, eat, and even whistle. If you suffer from malocclusion, it’s time to correct your bite with orthodontic treatment from Spillers Orthodontics in Warner Robins or Macon, GA! To help you identify malocclusion in your smile, Drs. Spillers and Gordon are happy to explain the four different bite issues commonly seen today:

Open bite
An open bite involves the anterior opening between the upper and lower teeth. When you bite down, the back teeth will touch but the front teeth will not, leaving a gap between the two jaws. This problem is generally caused by tongue-thrusting habits or thumb-sucking habits.

Overbite
An overbite involves the vertical overlapping of the upper teeth over the lower teeth. This issue can be hereditary or it can be caused by a misaligned jaw. It can also occur because of daily habits, such as eraserhead chewing or nail biting.

Overjet
An overjet involves the horizontal projection of the upper teeth beyond the lower teeth. Generally, the front teeth stick out farther and don’t quite cover the lower teeth, which is the difference between an overbite and an overjet. This issue is due to a large upper jaw, small lower jaw, or a combination of the two.

Crossbite
A crossbite occurs when the top teeth bite inside the lower teeth. This can happen with the front or back teeth. This issue is due to genetics, prolonged thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, misaligned teeth, or missing teeth.
